Missing attached file

This document addresses some of the common reasons why users might get error messages when clicking on a link to an attached file (PDF, XLS, etc.).

Error Message

Something along the lines of:
HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found
The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Requested URL    http://files.crmtool.net:80/lead_attached_files/WKGP14197/14197-20121017-241_filename.pdf
Physical Path    E:\LeadMaster_Attached_Files\WKGP14197\14197-20121017-241_filename.pdf

Known Causes

  • Filename contains multiple periods (.)
  • Filename is too long – 100 character maximum
  • Filename contains special characters like #, &, ‘, @
  • Can also be caused if the connection to the server was dropped mid-upload

This error does not occur unless the file is actually missing, so the only solution is to avoid having it happen again. Avoid really long filenames and any special characters in your filenames.
